Part 5 - Ferry to Donsak - Sleeper train to Buttersworth, Malaysia and a taxi to Georgetown
We left Chaweng Beach about mid afternoon and took a bus - basically a small pick up truck with bench seating and a roof in the back - to the pier at Nathon.
Boarded the ferry to Donsak and an hour and a half later we took a minvan to Surat Thani.
Met some great guys from the UK - John and Ian - and hung out with them - almost too long as we got very lucky finding a taxi to get us to the train station for our 1 am departure.
Another sleeper train to Butterworth - we arrived about 7am and then got a taxi ride over a 11 km bridge to Georgetown and the main tourist area around Lebhu Chulia.
After securing some beds for the night we ventured out to explore the area - visited the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, Fort Cornwallis, City Hall and a few mosques.
Next day we took the funicular car up to the top of Phanang Hill - Ali was looking a little worse for wear half way up but hung in there and we had an enjoyable afternoon checking out the temple, mosque, bird sanctuary and all the views. We had a quick snack and a drink of something called "grass jelly" - a name that totally conveys the essence of this interesting beverage - before heading down the 4 km hike to the bottom.
This post ends with a few of the interesting creatures we encountered along the way - the spider was huge!!
